Richard Hughes (1900–1976) was an English novelist, short story writer, and playwright. The classics of English prose of the 20th century included his novels “A Strong Wind in Jamaica” (1929), the cycle of novels “The Lot of Man”, the sea story “At Luck”, etc. The story “The Stranger” is taken from the collection “The Best English Stories of 1923”. Published in Russian in the journal “Foreign Literature” No. 3, 1992.
