In the year 1363 from the Nativity of Christ, two people die in the Abbey of St. Mary under similar, but very strange circumstances: an unknown pilgrim and the noble Sir Oswald Fitzwilliam. The cause of their death appears to have been a drug prepared by an apothecary named Nicholas Wilton. What seems even more mysterious to everyone is the fact that Wilton himself was gripped by a serious illness. The one-eyed Owen Archer, a former archery captain and ducal spy, now in the service of the Archbishop of York, will have to figure out the intricacy of secrets.
