Isaak Emmanuilovich Babel (1894–1940) lived and worked in the era of the cult of personality, a period that had a heavy impact both on Russian literature as a whole and on the fate of the writer himself. In 1939, Babel was arrested and soon executed. But, despite such a short life path, neither Russian nor world literature is unthinkable today without his work.
