Priscilla Meyer shows how Nabokov's first English-language novel sheds light on his subsequent work. The connections between Nabokov's characters and the previous tradition of Russian, English and American literature and philosophy are revealed. All of Nabokov’s work is subordinated to the desire for inaccessible knowledge about another world, and since this desire is endless, the writer’s novels have no plot or thematic conclusion, no denouement.
