The book by Peter Heather, an authoritative specialist in the history of the early Middle Ages, is dedicated to the great migration of peoples in the 1st millennium AD. The author gives a comprehensive description of the period that became key for the emergence of nations and the creation of the first states of the Franks, Germans, Slavs and other peoples; analyzes patterns and causes of migration in the context of transformations affecting the western part of the continent. Peter Heather pays particular attention to the large-scale Slavicization of Central and Eastern Europe and the strengthening of the Slavic states that exist to this day. While defending the decisive role of migration in the transformation of barbarian Europe, the historian does not diminish the importance of internal economic, social and political transformations, as well as the interpenetration of cultures, the spread of Christianity, writing and crafts. Describing the birth of a new Europe, Peter Heather convincingly argues that migration is a key phenomenon of the 1st millennium that determined the modern map of the world.
