In the north of the huge continent of Eon, people have been at war since ancient times with the mysterious tribes of the Kvars, the twilight people. And the next day, in the bedroom of the royal castle, the prince regent, temporarily replacing the captive ruler of the kingdom of the Southern Reach, is brutally murdered. The throne is occupied by the willful princess Bryony and the sickly, nightmare-ridden prince Barrick. Meanwhile, the twilight people of the Qvars prepare for the final battle with the people, and the army of shadows goes on the march.
