Меттью Бартоломью, як головний герой, викликає симпатію, адже його боротьба за виживання та справедливість стає особистою справою. Читачі отримують не лише захоплюючий сюжет, а й можливість замислитися над моральними питаннями, які стоять за діями героїв. Єдине, що трохи відволікає від читання, це моменти, коли переклад не зовсім точний, але це не зменшує загального враження від книги.
