The book examines the aesthetics and philosophy of avant-garde (free) jazz against a broad musical and historical background, analyzing its form and content, features of style and perception, social, aesthetic and ethnic sources of development. Using an interdisciplinary (primarily cultural) approach to the study of the basic elements of free jazz music, the author creates a conceptual theory of jazz evolution. The book devotes significant space to consideration of the mechanism of improvisation in free jazz, systemic and semiotic analysis of its musical structure.
