Here is the continuation of the collection of fairy tales “Wonders” - the story “White Wolf”. This is a book about the first days of the village of Vysotskoye, about how long ago Russian people, who sailed from the North, founded a settlement among the impassable forest that then surrounded the River. “The White Wolf” is not an ordinary fairy tale, at least not like that, like "Wonderful Things". The main character here is not one person, but all the inhabitants of the village, a small people who lived in one place for several centuries and step by step conquered patches of arable land from the forest. Somewhere far away in the capital, governments, princes and kings were changing. Hordes of conquerors swept across the country, and uprisings arose on the outskirts. Scholarly books were written in monasteries, discoveries were made in cities, and the passions of unrest and schism raged in the squares. But in Vysotskoye, lost in the middle of the vast Russian plain, among ancient forests and slow, foggy rivers, time passed slowly. All world events had only a distant echo in the lives of the peasants. The villagers stood with their backs to the only path leading to the Ryazan highway: their faces were turned in the other direction, to the blue-green edge of the forest. The forest fed and warmed the peasant, but it was also a mysterious and hostile place. People peered into the darkness behind the trees, tried to unravel the meaning of the noise of branches and the creaking of trunks, understand bird voices and animal howls, read signs on the ground, in the water and in the sky. The story “White Wolf” tells about the agreement that was concluded long ago by an old Chur with the guardian of the forest. We will talk about how the descendants of Chur violated this agreement and what came of it. The action of the book takes place in one particularly cold and snowy winter, when Vysotsky’s fate was being decided, in that very winter, at the end of which the forest retreated and man became the absolute master of the surrounding places.
