New York artist Jeff Rooker persuades his friend, the owner of an art gallery, to stage a hoax of his death in a car accident in order to sharply raise the prices of paintings. The plan seems almost perfect. Under an assumed name, Rooker hides in the remote countryside. But suddenly the writer Lillian Brown arrives there. And, having settled on the farm that she inherited, she begins work on a novel about... the mysterious death of Rooker. Lillian and Jeff fall in love. However, the girl begins to suspect that her neighbor and the disappeared artist are one and the same person. Suspicions are heightened by a friend who works at an insurance company and is investigating Rucker’s disappearance. Lillian and Jeff's love is put to the test. But in the end they stay together.
