Lawrence Watt-Evans wrote "Why I Left Harry's 24-Hour Burgers" in 1987, and it was first published in Isaac Asimov's Journal of Science Fiction in July 1987. That same year, the story was nominated for a Nebula Award, and in 1988 received the prestigious literary Hugo Award.
