“Grabber Martin” is an allegorical story of a petty soul, entrenched in sin, on the threshold of life and death. According to Golding, Christopher Hadley Martin selfishly used the freedom of choice given to him by God - all his life he tried to snatch it wherever possible, and did evil. The hero's nickname (pincher - petty thief, grabber) speaks for itself. In addition to the fact that this nickname in the British Navy is traditionally awarded to all sailors named Martin, in the figurative series of the parable it also acquires another, allegorical meaning: Grabber Martin, in the spirit of medieval morality, personifies one of the deadly sins - Greed (it is no coincidence that the producer of the theater in which he served in the navy, offers him to play the role of Greed). A number of repeated images in the novel serve as a metaphorical expression of the hero’s inner essence: an eternally open mouth, greedily absorbing everything that comes to hand, teeth grinding food, claws grabbing prey. Even beyond the point of death, Martin remains true to himself: his insignificant, small self, like a crushed, squirming worm, continues to cling to life with all its might.
