"Gentlemen Volunteers" is the first part of Boris Vasiliev's dilogy "They Happened and They Never Happened," dedicated to the noble family of the Oleksins. It’s the seventies of the 19th century, painful events are happening in the family, and a liberation war against the Turkish yoke is going on in the Balkans. Борис Васильєв майстерно відтворює атмосферу 70-х років ХІХ століття, занурюючи читача в епоху, коли молоді люди, такі як Олексини, вирушають у небезпечну подорож до Балкан, щоб боротися за свободу. Ця історія не лише про війну, а й про людські стосунки, дружбу, відвагу та готовність йти на жертви заради вищої мети. Незважаючи на те, що текст перекладено за допомогою штучного інтелекту, я знайшов його досить якісним, і лише в окремих місцях помітив незначні неточності. Книга спонукає до роздумів про моральні цінності, патріотизм та відповідальність, і я впевнений, що вона залишить слід у серцях багатьох читачів.
