Автор майстерно зображує внутрішній конфлікт Утреда Беббанбурзького, який опиняється між своїми обов'язками та особистими переконаннями. Його боротьба за вірність королю Альфреду та спроби зрозуміти, що означає бути лояльним у часи змін, роблять його персонажа надзвичайно глибоким і реалістичним. Читачі можуть відчути емоційний тягар, з яким стикається Утред, а також напруження, яке супроводжує його подорож до Лундену. Сюжет наповнений динамічними битвами, політичними маневрами та несподіваними поворотами, які тримають у напрузі до останньої сторінки.
