The historical story of the famous Soviet writer V. G. Yan (Yanchevetsky) “Lights on the Mounds,” first published in 1932 and subsequently revised and expanded, tells about the talented but cruel conqueror Alexander the Great. The writer tried to portray him as he really was: a destroyer of cities, a destroyer of the civilian population of entire regions, executing everyone who resisted him or seemed suspicious.

Книга «Вогні на курганах» є надзвичайно потужним твором, який змушує читача задуматися про природу влади та жорстокості. В. Г. Ян майстерно зображує Олександра Македонського не лише як великого завойовника, але й як людину, чия жорстокість і безжальність призводять до страждань багатьох. Автор не боїться показати темні сторони цього історичного персонажа, що робить повість надзвичайно актуальною навіть у наш час. Хоча переклад тексту має деякі недоліки, загальна якість виконання все ж дозволяє насолодитися глибоким змістом та емоційною напругою твору. Книга залишає по собі відчуття тривоги та роздумів про наслідки війни і завоювань. Рекомендую всім, хто цікавиться історією та хоче зрозуміти, якою ціною досягається велич.
