Zbigniew Mentzel is a modern Polish writer, a master of the small form, the author of two books of short stories. His story “All the Languages of the World” was included in the shortlist of candidates for the most prestigious literary award in Poland, “Nike”, and attracted many responses. This is a story about one day in the life of a hero, our contemporary, trying to express himself and give meaning to his existence. At the same time, this is also a picture of the life of an ordinary Polish family that shared the difficult fate of the Polish intelligentsia. Sketches relating to today alternate with descriptions of events of the ancient and recent past, and reflections on the mysteries of human existence and the essence of language, hiding behind laughter and the grotesque, end with the miracle of its acquisition.
