In volumes 4-5-6 of the Collected Works, “The Gulag Archipelago” is published - a world-famous epic that reveals the meaning and content of repressive policies in the USSR from the early Soviet Leninist years to Khrushchev’s (1918–1956). This artistic study, translated into dozens of languages, showed with striking clarity the entire diabolical mechanism for the destruction of one’s own people. The book is based on a wealth of factual material, including hundreds of personal testimonies. The fate of the victim is traced: arrest, the meat grinder of the investigation, the comedy of the “trial,” the verdict, the death penalty, and for those who escaped it, years of backbreaking, exhausting labor; the inner life of a prisoner - “soul and barbed wire”, life in camps (corrective labor and convict), stages from island to island of the Archipelago, camp uprisings, exile, post-camp freedom. Volume 6 includes parts Five: “Katorga”, Sixth: “Link” and Seventh: “Stalin is gone”; an annotated index of names (more than two thousand) is provided.
