Top New Testament scholars Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan team up to reveal a radical and obscure Jesus. Both authors found that many Christians are unclear about the details and events of the final week leading up to Jesus' crucifixion. Using Mark's Gospel as their guide, Borg and Crossan chronicle the final week of Jesus' life. They begin their story on Palm Sunday with two triumphal entries into Jerusalem. The first is the procession of the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, led by Roman soldiers, symbolizing the military power of the empire. The second procession heralded a new type of moral hero, whom people admired as he rode in on a humble donkey. The Jesus introduced by Borg and Crossan is a new moral hero, a more dangerous Jesus than the one known in the traditional teachings of the church. The final week depicts a Jesus who gives up his life to protest against power without justice and condemn the rich who do not matters to caring for the poor. In this vein, at the end of the week, Jesus goes to Calvary, offering himself as a model for others to do the same when faced with similar problems. Informed, questioned and inspired, we not only meet the historical Jesus, but we also meet a new Jesus who draws us in and invites us to follow him.
