The third volume of the famous “Human Evolution” describes new discoveries made by archaeologists, paleoanthropologists, ethologists and geneticists over the past ten years, as well as new theories that make our understanding of our own origins fuller and deeper. In the light of new data, some previous conclusions can be looked at from a different angle, and sometimes new interpretations can be proposed. Thus, to explain the surprisingly rapid increase in brain volume in the evolution of the genus Homo, a promising new idea has been proposed - the theory of “cultural drive,” or the coupled evolution of the brain, social learning and culture.
