At the beginning of August 1980, about a hundred Soviet soldiers and officers of the 201st Motorized Rifle Division died in the gorges between the village of Karasdekh and Mount Shaesta. Most of the losses fell on the 783rd separate reconnaissance battalion: on August 3, the scouts lost forty-seven people killed and forty-eight wounded. Meanwhile, the historical record of the 201st Division and the archives of the 40th Army do not mention a word about these battles. The author conducts an investigation and tries to understand: what happened in those terrible days and why is official history so stubbornly silent about it?
