The novel “I Served the King of England” tells the story of a short waiter who explores the world with curiosity. He looks for beauty in a brothel, in the work of a waiter who serves the English king or the Ethiopian emperor, in eroticism, in wealth... The whole novel is imbued with irony; Hrabal's hero, like Goethe's Faust, finds peace and freedom, but not happiness, and is again ready to go to great lengths in search of beauty.
