G.F. Lovecraft did not publish a single book during his lifetime, but became a beacon and reference point for an entire genre, an idol of both the general reading masses and refined intellectuals, and an inexhaustible source of inspiration for filmmakers. Borges himself admired his stories, in which the place of man is on the distant periphery of the universal scheme of things, and supermundane forces instill sacred horror in the souls of the unwary. “The Cthulhu Mythos” is the most representative of the “official” collections of the so-called post-Lovecraft; here such masters as Stephen King, Henry Kuttner, Robert Bloch, Fritz Leiber and others pay tribute to the founding father of the genre, test the strength of the techniques he declared, and explore, each in his own way, the geography of his legendary imagination.
