Автор майстерно поєднує елементи детективу з історичними фактами, створюючи напружену атмосферу, яка тримає в напрузі до останньої сторінки. Персонажі, зокрема детектив Ежен Франсуа Відок, прописані дуже детально, їхні мотивації та переживання викликають співчуття і зацікавленість. Особливо вражає те, як автор переплітає реальні історичні події з вигадкою, змушуючи читача замислитися над долею юного дофіна Луї Шарля.
