“On That Ship” is one of Forster’s last stories. Work on it was completed when the author turned seventy-nine years old. The action takes place over one night on board a ship sailing from England to India. And again, a love conflict unfolds between representatives of different social strata - a theme that occupied Forster all his life, and not only in art. The night conversation in the cabin, which led to the tragic ending, was called by critics a small masterpiece, and the gloomy irony of the last paragraph - a worthy ending to Forster’s entire prose.
