The book by A. Diesperov, published in 1916, is still an unsurpassed study in Russian about Bl. Jerome. Dispersov does not write a hagiography; his work is a biography placed in a historical and cultural context. The second part of the title - “his century” - is fundamental: the author unfolds a wide panorama of spiritual, religious, literary processes of that era. And the era is not at all “timeless” - a change from antiquity to Christianity, a radical turning point in history. Jerome stands right in the center of this fracture.
