“In intellectual circles, a traditional attitude towards philosophy has been established: the latter is looked upon ... as something that constitutes the area of individual discretion, individual assessments, individual creativity. It is argued that a divergence, even the most fundamental, in philosophical matters should not at all indicate the presence of social disagreements. Philosophical ideas seem to be too little and too weakly connected with any class background. And the defense of a certain class position therefore does not, according to the generally accepted view, determine sympathy for a certain philosophical school. On the contrary, in this case, wide freedom of choice is allowed. Very, very many Marxists adhere to the same view. ..."
