Автор майстерно відтворює атмосферу епохи, в якій живе головний герой Микита Мещеряков, нащадок білих емігрантів, що повертається на Батьківщину з бажанням помсти. Його внутрішня боротьба між ненавистю до більшовиків та усвідомленням, що справжніми ворогами можуть бути не лише фашисти, але й звичайні люди, які виконують свій обов'язок, змушує читача задуматися над складними моральними питаннями. Книга не лише розповідає про війну, але й про людські почуття, втрати та вибір, який кожен з нас змушений робити в найскладніші часи. Незважаючи на деякі недоліки в перекладі, які не заважають загальному сприйняттю, я вважаю, що ця книга заслуговує на увагу.
