The grandson of N. M. Karamzin, a prominent journalist and political figure, Prince V. P. Meshchersky (1839–1914) for a number of years was a friend and confidant of Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich, and from 1881, Emperor Alexander III. The publishing house “New Literary Review” has already published two volumes of Meshchersky’s letters to the Grand Duke for 1863–1868. (2011) and 1869–1878. (2014). The letters published for the first time from 1881–1894, no longer to the heir to the throne, but to the autocrat, concern more general issues directly related to the behind-the-scenes side of the country’s domestic and foreign policy. They contain valuable information about the emperor, the activities of the ministries and the State Council and about various aspects of Russian life at that time, as well as about the author of the letters and his newspaper “Grazhdanin”.

The text of the book was translated from the original language using an artificial intelligence program.
