The era of 1919–1929 in the United States, called a period of prosperity, is one of the most controversial in the history of this country. “The final victory over poverty” and the nation as a “consumer society”, the cult of profit and the emancipation of morals with references to Freud, immigration as a threat to the state and racial theories, the Ku Klux Klan as the guardian of morality and Hollywood as the abode of vice, advertising as a social tyrant and tabloids as trendsetters of public opinion, Prohibition as a guarantee of the nation’s health and Al Capone as a symbol of prosperity, the war of gangster gangs and organized crime in the service of politicians... All this, which became a road of disappointment for Americans, led the country to the Great Depression in the early 1930s -x, so reminiscent of our “perestroika”, which started half a century later. And from this point of view, the book will certainly interest the widest reader.
