This cycle was written by Moorcock in 1957–1958. At that time, he worked as the editor of Tarzan Adventures magazine, and all the stories in the series were first published in it. In spirit, the stories from the series about Sojan and other warriors of Zilor are very similar to Moorcock's Martian cycle, and, as a result, to similar works by Burroughs. They are not of particular interest to the reader, but rather will be useful to researchers of Moorcock’s work in order to understand where it all began... All the stories were published under many different titles, and were subsequently collected in the collection Sojan (Sojan), 1977. In a later edition all the parts telling specifically about Sojan were combined into the novel Sojan the Swordsman (Sojan the Swordsman), 1984. In the Russian translation, the story “Rens Carto from Bercnol” was added to the novel.
