Andrew Blake decides to dramatically change his life. There are enough reasons: his wife died, his daughter got married and went to live in America, his favorite job became uninteresting. Blake entrusts the management of his enterprise to an assistant, moves from his native England to France and is hired... as a majordomo in a castle located in a remote province. Its inhabitants, at first glance, are not very pleasant people: a closed and arrogant hostess; the stern cook is an old maid who can only speak kindly to her cat named Mephistopheles; a young maid suffering from unrequited love; an eccentric, unsociable manager; a cheeky teenager who, at fourteen, had never really learned to read or count... Where did I end up? “We have to run away from here,” Blake decides. But he stays for a day, then a week, then a month... And unexpectedly he finds true friends and a new life.
