The novel "Western Lands" (1987) is the last part of the trilogy, which also includes "Cities of the Red Night" (1981) and "The Space of Dead Roads" (1984).
"Western Lands" presents represents the author's last attempt to triumph over time. The writer's alter ego, William Seward Hall, "intends to unsubscribe from death." As in the other books in the trilogy, the key to escape is fantasy, but it, as Hall finds, is unable to transform or explain death. With the help of imagination and words, Hall wants to find his paradise, but writing alone is not enough to find it.
