The Black Mask (1901) is Hornung's second collection of short stories, detailing the adventures of gentleman thief A. J. Raffles. His crimes are still inventive and disturb the well-fed, measured life of high society. Stories about Raffles have been adapted more than once for theater and cinema; the television series “Raffles” (1975) was based on them.
