The novel “The Life of Marianne, or the Adventures of the Countess de ***” (1731–1741) was written by the largest representative of French psychological prose, Pierre Carlet de Chamblin de Marivaux (1688–1763). This is the story of a rootless foundling, a very young girl who, entering life, is faced with lust, envy and selfishness of the people inhabiting her, but thanks to her innate nobility, she emerges victorious from the most difficult and confusing situations.
