One of Vasily Aksenov’s most famous novels is a mischievous, brilliantly written chronicle of the fictional photo album “Say Raisins.” Several famous Soviet photographers conceived an idea that was unthinkable for Soviet reality - to collect their works in one album and publish it, bypassing censorship. Vigilant guards of party ideology and “organs” (in the novel, “glands”) begin to pursue “ideological saboteurs.” Behind the fascinatingly fictional story of the uncensored photo album “Say the Raisin” one can discern the very real story of the famous literary almanac “Metropol”, the authors of which took aim at one of the cornerstones of the regime - censorship and paid for it, and behind the masters of the lens, behind the heroes of the book - Metropol residents, famous writers and poets, including the author of the novel himself.
