One of the most complex and still almost unknown to specialists processes during the end of the First World War was the withdrawal of German troops from the vast territories they had occupied since the summer of 1915, as well as following the results of the Brest-Litovsk Treaty. Finding themselves hundreds of kilometers from home, in a foreign country engulfed in revolution and Civil War, German soldiers and their command in November 1918 – March 1919 were forced to make desperate efforts so as not to repeat the fate of Napoleon’s Grand Army. In addition to the desire of the soldiers to get home as soon as possible, it was necessary to take into account the interests of the inhabitants of starving Germany, the political situation on the eve of the world revolution, and the pressure of the Entente countries. Relations with the local population, split along political and national lines, remained extremely difficult.
