Modern ethnographic science has achieved success in a variety of fields. The works of scientists devoted to ethnogenesis, ethnographic history, customs and rituals, folklore, material culture and life of different peoples of the world fill more than one cabinet in the library. Anyone interested can get a fairly clear idea of the most diverse aspects of the daily life of almost any nation. And only one topic is traditionally treated with bashful silence in science - these are latrines, the rules for their use and the associated set of behavioral norms (including often of a religious nature), as well as methods for disposing of other waste (garbage of various types). Meanwhile, it is difficult not to recognize that toilets and garbage occupy a significant place in any culture: visiting the toilet (in the broadest sense of the word) is as natural as eating on time (which is obvious if only because the first is a logical consequence of the second), and distancing from waste is part of the daily life of any ethnic group along with the initiation rite. However, in scientific and even in popular science literature, disappointingly little research has been devoted to such an interesting subject. This book is intended not only and not so much for specialists (are there any specialists in the science of “toilet science”?), but for everyone interested, and can also be used as A guide to toilet etiquette customary in Eastern countries.
