Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, written by Srila Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami, is the main work describing the life of Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the great saint and religious reformer of the 16th century. About five hundred years ago, Caitanya Mahaprabhu started a powerful social and religious movement in India. His teachings, which formed the basis of this movement, directly or indirectly influenced all schools of philosophical and religious thought that arose after this, not only in India, but also abroad. The spread of this teaching outside India is largely due to the efforts of Sri Srimad A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, translator and commentator of this work, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
