The stories in the letters of Mark Twain's great-niece, the American writer Jean Webster (1876–1916), brought her truly worldwide fame. The play based on these works, staged on Broadway, as well as film versions created over the years, in the first of which the role of the heroine was played by the famous silent film actress Mary Pickford, were invariably a resounding success.
