A classic study of the patriarch of American social philosophy, historian and architect, whose works, from The Culture of Cities (1938) to Sketches from Life (1982), had a huge influence on the development of American urbanism and futurology. The book “The Myth of the Machine” was first published in 1967 and summed up the five-year sociological and art historical research of Mumford, by that time already a member of the American Academy of Arts and winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It introduces concepts that later became commonplace in various branches of humanities: from the history of science to applied linguistics. In his book, Mumford gives a lengthy and very extravagant retrospective of this project, from primitive experiences to the late Renaissance.
