The heroes of Nikolai Gogol's (1809–1852) poem “Dead Souls” (1842) are here immersed in the atmosphere of post-revolutionary Russia, where they feel especially at ease in the era of NEP. Sometimes they paradoxically, almost mystically coincide with Bulgakov’s real contemporaries. Chichikov’s adventures are “Dead Souls”, read by Bulgakov through the eyes of Berdyaev in the context of the Russian revolution.
