The book by Phyllis Hartnoll (1906–1997), a British poet and theater scholar and author of the first theater encyclopedias in English, is considered a classic overview of the history of the performing arts from antiquity to the present day. A lively and fairly detailed presentation of basic information about the development of drama, directing, acting and theatrical architecture makes it an indispensable textbook for theater students. The text is accompanied by many illustrations that provide a visual representation of the topics covered in it, as well as reference materials. The publishing layout of the book is saved in PDF A4 format.
The text of the book was translated from the original language using an artificial intelligence program.
