Having become acquainted with the first part of the memoirs, published in 1857 in the February book “Libraries for Reading,” N. G. Chernyshevsky wrote: “The facts reported by Mr. Annenkov significantly explain to us Gogol as a person... in general, Mr. Annenkov’s view of his character seems almost the fairest of all those that have been expressed so far...”
