“P. V. Annenkov’s memories of Gogol are unique. This is both a memoir and at the same time a detailed critical essay, covering Gogol’s ideological and creative path as a whole. Having become acquainted with the first part of the memoirs, published in 1857 in the February book “Libraries for Reading,” N. G. Chernyshevsky wrote: “The facts reported by Mr. Annenkov significantly explain to us Gogol as a person... in general, Mr. Annenkov’s view of his character seems almost the fairest of all those that have been expressed so far...”
