The book “Flight with a Hero” was prepared for the 70th anniversary of the classic of modern Russian literature Andrei Bitov, prose writer, screenwriter, public figure, winner of many literary awards, president of the Russian Pen Club. Along with the novel “Pushkin House,” which was called epoch-making in its time, this is the author’s most St. Petersburg book, consisting of two sections. The dotted novel “Flying Monks” is structured like Lermontov’s “Hero of Our Time”: the short stories are connected by one hero. But if Pechorin is a hero of one age, then Monakhov lives for half a century over the course of six chapters: all seasons of male age, from a teenager to an elderly man. But the motif of first love permeates all six short stories of the novel. Fate or retribution? It seems that it was difficult for the author himself to understand this, it took him so long to answer this question. The novel has been translated into many languages and was awarded the Russian State Prize in 1992. Monakhov is a St. Petersburg resident, his hometown is one way or another the background of his entire love story. In the St. Petersburg suite “Palace without a Tsar,” St. Petersburg itself turns out to be the endless first love. This work was awarded the Ivan Bunin Prize in 2006. The texts presented in the publication are published for the first time in a new author’s edition.
