The main character, Larisa Borisovna, head of the surgical department of a district hospital, learns that in a few days there will be an appointment to buy a car. In order to get into this queue, a huge spontaneous queue is created, in which people stand for several days. It brings together people of different interests, views, and professions who would hardly meet in ordinary life. The queue has its own joys and sorrows, conversations, dances and illnesses. For 4 days, the entire life of several hundred people is one big QUEUE.
