The collection of short essays “The World as a Supermarket” explains and structures the novels of M. Houellebecq. The “philosophy of life” of an alarmed European of the 1990s is built into a rigid, clear, writerly simple scheme. “Peace as will and representation,” according to Houellebecq, is no longer possible. The will that pursues a certain personal goal and thereby determines the meaning of life is weakened and dispersed: “The logic of the supermarket provides for the dispersion of desires; a person in a supermarket organically cannot be a person of one will, one desire.”
