Having learned about Lara McClintock's trip to Thailand, she is approached by Natalie Beauchamp, the wife of Lara's antique dealer friend, William Beauchamp, who has gone missing in Thailand. Natalie asks to make inquiries about her husband and gives Lara a package received by mail, in which, among strange notes, notices, photographs and newspaper clippings, she found three terracotta figurines of Buddha, one of which was split into two halves.
