The book by English military historian David Devine explores the course of the 1940 operations in the West, which led to the defeat of the Allied armies in Flanders, as well as the subsequent events in the Dunkirk area (Operation Dynamo). The author used official documents from both sides, diaries and letters from event participants. Devine challenges some of the popular versions in Western historiography about the reasons that allowed the British expeditionary force to avoid complete defeat in the Dunkirk area, and puts forward his point of view on this issue. The second part of the book, “War Roads” is the diary of the English officer and war correspondent Richard Squires , which describes the events of the Dunkirk operation through the eyes of an eyewitness.
