The legend of Hayk, the mythical ancestor of the Armenians, underlies the entire ancient Armenian mythological epic. According to ancient Armenian legends, Noah’s grandson Hayk drew the boundaries of the future Armenian state around three lakes located around Mount Ararat: Sevan, Urmia and Van. However, the bloody tyrant Bel, ruler of Babylon, invaded the newly created kingdom of Hayk, and on August 11, 2492 BC. e., a fierce battle between the Babylonians and Armenians. It happened in the town of Hayots Dzor. In a bloody battle, Hayk killed Bel with a well-aimed bow shot. The body of the defeated invader was carried to the top of the mountain and burned. From then on, Hayk became the founder of the Armenian kingdom. Later, he became deified among the Armenians and the entire people began to call themselves the word “hai,” emphasizing their ancestry from the legendary giant. Before his death, Hayk granted power over the country to his eldest son, Aramanyak, from whose name came various derivative forms of the name of the Armenian people: Ermeni, Armeni, Arima, Armani, etc. This book retells in detail the entire epic about Aria Hayk.
