A woman, a Jew and a scientist are a difficult combination for the turbulent 20th century. Austrian by birth, Lise Meitner faced condescension and even contempt from her male colleagues throughout her life and suffered persecution by the Nazis. Her collaboration with the German chemist Otto Hahn lasted more than three decades and culminated in the discovery of a new element, protactinium, and proof of the possibility of nuclear fission. However, despite these contributions, Meitner was denied the Nobel Prize. She always defended the need for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, in the study of which she played such a prominent role. Today, the researcher has become the embodiment of a scientific genius and a symbol of the fight against intolerance and prejudice.
